Process monitoring eliminates tool breakage even with extreme material fluctuations
Despite having know-how and years of experience in machine and process optimization, e-pro-tec continually experienced costly tool breakages. The company, based in Göppingen, primarily manufactures very tough materials whose composition can fluctuate extremely from batch to batch. With the investment in process monitoring UT-Tm®-Basic from UTTec has not only solved this problem, but is now also able to run certain quantities in unmanned night shifts.
Process monitoring greatly increases uptime and thus enables unmanned manufacturing
With the investment in another Leistritz turbine machine, the company Lock Antriebstechnik in Ertingen pursued the goal of faster and easier retrofitting in the future while simultaneously building up unmanned production. However, enormous material fluctuations frequently led to costly tool breakage. Therefore, in 2022, the company invested in the UT-Tm® tool and process monitoring system from UTTec. Since then, tool life has nearly quadrupled, and quality and productivity now meet current demands.
Process safety measurable increased, cycle times reduced
In part, Eisenmann Druckguss is the sole supplier for a major automotive manufacturer. Therefore, production runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week on the machining centers. Problems within the supply chain would have catastrophic consequences. To further increase process reliability, optimize cycle times, prevent scrap, and detect wear prematurely, the company invested in monitoring systems. UT-Tm®-Basic by UTTec.
Open monitoring system for Swiss-type lathes generates added value
Swiss-type lathes are usually used for large-scale production, cost-effectiveness, and high precision. However, the situation is different at Robert Höhne when it comes to batch sizes. The company intentionally uses this machine concept for small-batch production with demanding materials. The necessary process reliability in unmanned operation is ensured by the monitoring system. UT-Tm®-Basic with an open structure, as a basic requirement was that data could be fed back into one's own M/BDE system.
Optimized off-peak times,
Drastically reduced cycle times
The continuously increasing cost pressure forces companies to continuously save time. The company Lupal in Waiblingen demonstrates the enormous opportunities that can be achieved here solely through optimizations on the machine tool. Together with UTTec, they have focused on auxiliary times and thus achieved a cycle time reduction of almost ten percent. In doing so, no drive parameters were changed; only the NC program, which is approved for the machine by the machine and control manufacturer, was optimized.
